A Few Ways You Can Increase Home Security in California

California is known the world over thanks to Hollywood and big metropolitan areas like Los Angeles and San Francisco. Because of its favorable climate and large economy, people come from far and wide to carve out a niche in the Golden State. Unfortunately, criminals have the exact same thing in mind. They know that the state is rip with potential targets and they would love to live there as long as people continue to take their home security for granted. How are they going to fare when they get to your home? If you have some of the following measures in place, they’re probably not going to succeed.

1. A guard dog has stood the test of time and remains one of the best ways to protect your home. Dogs are naturally territorial and once you put one in your backyard it’s instinctively going to try to protect that space against any and all intruders. Unfortunately, they come with their own set of downsides. For starters, not all dogs are cut out to be guard dogs. Some are much friendlier than others and thus may not be all that aggressive towards potential intruders. Secondly, they have to be properly trained or they could do substantial damage to your home. Finally, even a fierce guard dog can be bypassed. For example, a criminal could open the gate and let them loose. It won’t be much of a home security measure when it’s running around the neighborhood. Despite those points, a well-trained dog is a great security asset.

2. The right external lighting can have a big impact as well. A combination of motion-activated flood lights and timers can make it hard for criminals to creep up to your home. Lighting timers would probably be best but you might feel like you’re wasting electricity by having your lights on most of the night. That’s why many homeowners opt to make use of motion-activated flood lights instead. Whenever motion is detected, the lights will turn on and illuminate the entire area. Criminals usually change their minds when everyone can see what they’re doing, making such lights a great home security asset even if they’re only useful at night.

3. Despite popular opinion, most crimes happen in the daytime when people are at work. Lights wouldn’t deter criminals then and they’d also have enough time to either befriend your dog or let them loose. For those reasons, only a home alarm system is adequate for all day protection. It’ll monitor your doors and windows and it’ll be able to detect whenever they’ve been opened. If a criminal were to try to outsmart the system and break a window instead, motion sensors inside would catch them in the act anyway. It wouldn’t matter that a criminal has all day to try to bypass that system either because the system simply can’t be bypassed. Even a power outage or a broken telephone line wouldn’t phase it. There’s a reason why banks and businesses all over California place their trust in home alarm systems: they’re going to make sure that criminals don’t succeed.
